Today I took the right YICS engine cover off my 82 xj650 and a good amount of yellowish white powder came out of the cover. Could this be what is left of the gasket, and will this hurt me that there is no gasket in there?
    Thanks

No, that's crud and there was no gasket, there isn't one on that side. Use a stiff brush and a bit of penetrating oil, (be careful not to damage the crankshaft end seal) and clean it up a bit. Wipe the inside down with WD40 or the like and button it back up. Don't look in there anymore unless you feel a burning need (there's nothing to see.)

Ok, Thanks a lot. I was just worried because it must of been 27 years of crud in there. I was taking it off to replace it with a new one I picked up on ebay.

somebody might have removed the gasket in the past. Mine had a gasket there. But, I found the same thing when I took the cover off to polish one time. I just cleaned it up, cleaned it out, and put the cover back on w/ no gasket. I don't ride in much water, so it should be fine. Sometime I'll find a new gasket to put back in.

There was no gasket on the right side. You can install one if you feel the need, but the bike did not come with one. If your bike had one, it was a PO with the same need.
