So for those of you following, late last season I ran into this:http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/index...at-subside-after-3-seconds.47814/#post-425271

Had the rack off this winter and didn't really do anything to it, put it back on and the problem was still apparent, this time instead of driving 6 miles until something happened it would only be 2 -3 miles.

Symptoms were that after 2 - 3 miles my throttle would hang up and be slow (3 seconds) to drop back down to a 1100RPM. This was disturbing as it was inconsistent in it's behavior - fuel levels, vacuum leaks were checked multiple times - I could see the throttle cable relax but the butterflies were hanging open - pressing down on a synch screw would close them.

Finally after much head scratching and several rack removals (I can do it as quick as Hogfiddles now! :)) I decided to back off on the nuts between the synch screws (the ones on the end of the butterfly shafts by the return springs) they were locked down relatively tight and I did NOT use a torque wrench during assembly . Put rack back on and problem still persisted - but I noted that the plastic washer on the outside of #4 butterfly shaft that covers the throttle shaft seal and is held in place by the e-clip would not spin. I removed it and miced it up, it measured .035" . . . . but so did the old ones. I decided to 'grind it' down and removed .0015" from it. Reinstalled and it will now spin in position AND I have gone on 2 twenty miles rides with NO PROBLEM!

All I can figure is that when I put the carbs back together that there is enough play in the butterfly valve mounting holes and the over torqueing of the throttle shaft nuts that things were binding (only noticed when engine got hot??) - so by slightly loosening the nuts and removing the binding on the outside of #4 the issue has been resolved.

Hope this can help someone in the future.

    Let's ride!!!!! :)

did you put the butterflys in and then put the nuts on, pulling the butterflys to the side? If you did, you shouldn't have done dat :)
glad it worked out for ya

Yeah, don't do that.:) Glad you got it figured out Paul. I still haven't got my XJ's out this year yet. I've been mostly riding the Nomad. Soon though.
