Not how to but how much.

How much gear oil should I put in my rear end?
Can't find anywhere on how much to fill.

 

in factory service manual

Went to the yam dealer and they gave me yamaha gear oil It is 80 api gl-4 but not hypoid.
Is this ok?

GL-4 is a hypoid gear oil.

I am new to this and I am wondering where do you put the gear oil in on a 1983 xj 750? I haven't had my xj very long and I am still learning.

 

hypoid gear oil.
goes in the hub at the rear axel left side of bike. you will see a vent on top, an oil plug mid hub and bottom of hub. remove the fill plug first so you can check it (if you can not get top plug out do not remove bottom plug until you can remove it)
drain it from the bottom plug.

 

Okay how do I get the top plug out?

 

look at photo vent on top , fill at 3:00, drain under hub

 

Oh okay so you don't remove the vent just the fill plug

 

leave vent alone . open fill to check level and add to fill . remove drain to drain.

if you can't get fill plug out do not drain

I have to remember to put photo up first to avoid confusion

 

I don't know why it double posted the pictures lol I took that side cover off because it was leaking. Is this where gear oil goes?

 

If you are talking about the transmission (gearbox) it uses/shares the motor oil which is filled at the oil cap on the clutch cover

gear oil is for rear end like in a car


you can edit your post for a few minutes to remove extra photos

or a moderator can edit out extra photos

 

Did you see my picture of the cover where the shifter is? That is the one that was leaking. Is that the oil from the engine or gear oil from the final drive?

 

that is engine oil . the motor is a one piece unit with the gears inside the motor case uses same sump to supply oil to both sections

I just have one more question when you guys said 80w hypnoid gear oil all I have been seeing is 80-90 is that right?

 

yes that works too.
and to be clear IT does not go in motor just rear hub at axle

 

Lol yeah I know I have changed my oil a few times just haven't done anything with the rear drive gear oil.

 

I figured that . I sometimes forget that I am not talking to someone but writing things and that is to people with different skill sets and terminology of bike parts.

I just did it in another post about red warning light forgot about the Atari red warning light and focused on oil light. I just fixed my oil light had to high of a wattage bulb and poor contacrt.
I have a Atari cluster on my 82 750 maxim

just like the oil plug on top (but it is not on top just the highest plug) and you saw the vent on top I must be careful not to misdirect and cause people problems

 

Yeah lol I have been thinking about getting rid of my atari but I don't know if I want to try that yet lol

As an occasional (unfortunately) long-distance rider, I can vouch for the ATARI being a useful device. Even been riding along oblivious of the obvious? Just enjoying the day? Maybe a bit too far from a gas station, and on reserve?
Ya...warnings help avoid that problem.

 

Yeah I would agree however I need to figure out why my fuel gauge isn't working. Any idea?

 

Are the wires hooked up to the sending unit under the tank ?

The plug for the sending unit is under the seat. Easy to check. White flat plug with two wires coming from directly under the fuel tank.
Fairly often when I do maintenance that requires that the tank be lifted or removed, I forget to plug it back in.

 

My low fuel light never worked till i pulled the tank for paint, removed the sender and found the little wire inside broken at the solder point. Resolder, fixed! May be that simple.

 

I haven't been able to check yet. However I rode to work today and on the way home when I turn a corner my bike just died. It started right back up. And did it again when I turned into my driveway and started right up any ideas?

 

Which direction were you turning in, and how quickly?

 

To the right both times and around 20 or something like that and the second time was less than that

 

Check the routing of the wiring harness near the headstock and headlight. Look for a loose plug or worn insulation.

 

You think it's something to do with the headlights wire harness? I did install a led headlight. The bike will start right back up after it dies.

 

Turning the bars could wiggle a loose plug connection, or cause a worn wire to contact the frame, causing a short. Once the bars are straightened, the electric faries might be free to roam and perform their magic.

 

^that^. It could also be floats set too low, but that would cause a stall when braking in a straight and when turning in any direction at low speed.
