    Hello everybody!

    XJ550RH Seca with 11K miles.

So, winter is for cleaning. When I took off the right side YICS cover for polishing, I noticed a small amount of oil in an otherwise spotless area with a big black disc in the middle of it. There was also some oil that had seeped out around the cover onto the bolts and below the case. The case did not have a gasket and as near as I can tell, it never did.

My questions are 1)What is that big black disc called? 2)Is it easily replaceable? 3)Should the YICS cover have a gasket? (The left side YICS cover did.)

Thanks to everyone for the helps.

You don't have to split the cases to change that seal. Chacal sells a replacement seal that is shoulderless, and can be installed with out splitting the case. You will use a case sealing compound on the new seal, and let it st until cured. I reccomend Locktite 518.

You can degrease that seal and try to patch it wth RTV, but that will be a temporary fix at best. It might work, but it will fail again eventually. If it was just weeping that's what I'd do myself, and I'd particularly recommend doing that first if you've never changed an oil seal before.

Blind Plug, odd name for something that covers a crankcase but fine by me.
I SO have to get a better book than the one I had; it showed a picture of this but never mentioned it in the exploded diagram.

Thank you both for the information, now up to me to turn it to knowlege!
