Photo of new fusebox install

I thought I would share this photo of my new fusebox install. This is the box from chacal (HCP378BC Replacement FUSEBOX). Old fuse box is removed, tool tray support is cut away to allow new fuse box to be mounted to airbox. There is still plenty of material left to support tray and the attached ingnitor. Spade tabs (barely visible) are angled towards front to allow existing wires (with new connectors) to reach. Only the four fuses to the left are used. The others are left in there as spares. No more glass fuses! Woohoo!

Funny this post was brought up tonight as I was just about to post on how I spent this Sunday evening.

I have owned the bike for 12+ years now and had always cringed when I looked at the fusebox mess the PO had left for me. The tangled mess never gave me any problems that I am aware of but I am happy I finally got around to cleaning it up a little.

As you can see from the photos below the PO had spliced inline fuses into the harnes using "competition orange" wirenuts. Though they never gave me any trouble I was suprised at how much corrosion was under the wirenut on the main circuit.


Shangovi when you begin plan NOT TO BE IN A HURRY, use a high quality pair of wire strippers/crimpers and most of all shrink tube is your best friend

 

Ive also done the same for my XJ. Help me with loads of problems i was having. Very nice install.

Polock. I double dog dare you to push on the clip ends that hold the fuses! If you do this, don't plan on going anywhere because they are very likely to break. The only time my bike has let me down is when a fuse clip broke 100 miles from home. I jammed the fuse into the bottom of the clip and made it home. I wired in 4 waterproof blade fuses and things have been fine ever since. It's not as pretty as those boxes that Chacal sells but I didn't know he had them at the time.

 

Polock your lucky that those cheap clips Yamaha used have not broken yet. I just touched mine and they broke. You must have gotten the only good ones they made.

the sad part is i have a new fuse block on the bench, but i have a whole bunch of new glass fuses too

 

Thanks! Not sure how comfortable I am with the connectors sticking out like that. I'll probably fabricate something to cover them up

ranger & mn-max, i had the same thing happen to me in my process of resurecting my 650, i put new fuses in it last week & wouldn't you know it one of the clips broke. i just barely touched the darn thing & plink, it broke. i gotta upgrad!

I used to have pics of the job I did on my Seca on here. Ran out of room and deleted them from my main pics tho. Here's what it looks like. Some kind of animal made a nest and chewed almost all the wires away.There was a lot of new wire and solder involved there. Of course, later I took out the airbox and mounted it on a food container similar to what Wizard did. The airtight container is excellent for holding tools/maps/registration etc. And I still kept the original tool tray.

BUT ...
There's a problem with using RED Wire to redo wiring.
Anybody doing Troubleshooting would expect RED Wires to be: +12V (Hot)
Even though you have the Cover Labeled ... the ALL RED Wires are a CurveBall that will fool somebody tracing an Electrical Fault.

Not that I expect you to submit the bike to be judged and graded.
But ... IF you DID enter the Bike in a Contest where they were looking closely at the details ...

You'd lose some point for not recycling an old Wire Harness and using Matching Color-coded Wires for the Upgraded Fuse Panel.

 

SecaRob: i will need all the advice I can get come upgrade time as I'm not all that great a mech! hope I can get it close to what you have done. Great work nice n neat n clean.
