My 1&2 butterfly valves open sooner than my 3&4 butterfly valves. There is a lip on the throttle assembly that catches another lip that allows 3&4to be turned open and there is distance between them. 1&2 open together and are directly attached to the throttle as far as I can tell. 3&4 open together and are attached to the lip that is not attached to the throttle. need pics?

Ok Bill, I've decided that a bench sync is what I need. But my carbs work differently than that!!

Sorry for being such a pain.

There is an adjustment screw for 1&2 and an adjustment screw for 3&4. there seems to be something wrong with the throttle. Unless my 3&4 valves aren't supposed to open at the same time as 1&2 then the throttle isn't matching up right.

This still doesn't explain why my bike won't idle (on choke)...

Your carbs work the same; they're just configured differently.

Your bike has down-draft carburetors, like a NASCAR stock car.

Early XJs have side-draft carburetors like bikes have had since the beginning.

All the links Bill gave you supply the INFORMATION you need but the pictures and some of the descriptions will not be the same.

The information we have here in pictures and procedures DIRECTLY applies primarily to the older XJs with the side-draft carburetors, and you are correct, your throttle linkage is NOT the same.

You need to get a manual for YOUR bike; and use the information we provide COMBINED with the information from the book that is specific to your bike, to get the whole picture.

The principles are the same, not the practice. You won't find a quick answer; but you may find enough information to LEAD you to the answer that applies to your bike.

REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTER BEFORE YOU SCREW AROUND WITH YOUR CARBURETORS ANYMORE.

    That's my advice. Fitz out.

My manual (I have a Haynes for the bike) doesn't say anything about the part I'm talking about. But it doesn;t matter because I found a good enough picture to determine that I am indeed missing a screw and spring. It is the same as yall's hitachi throttle setup. There are two screw facing into the lip on the throttle that position it so 3&4 and 1&2 open up at the same time. Mine must be missing.

I explained this in post 1. Maybe I wasn't specific enough for you old guys. no offense btw I wish I had the wisdom you guys do, I would have known what was wrong in the first place... Also I found out that I had my boots on sideways and I think that its the reason it wouldn't idle...

I did figure it out! yay

I took a spring off an old tool and it fit right in there! There is a screw and spring on one side and just a spring on the other just like the valve adjusting screws.

I'm thinking the idling problem was because the boots were seated way off. There are tabs on the manifold and gaps in the boots so they can only be seated one way and I had them off... Ima go put her together and see what happens!

The lesson I've learned, put the cables on the carbs, then seat them so you don't have to jam a screwdriver in the throttle to keep it turned so you can get the cables in and end up knocking a spring out.... :D

Thanks for the help Bill and Fitz and MN
