Tried searching threads, new to site, looking for someone with a link to a site or thread giving step by step instructions for changing fork seals on my XJ. good mechanical background, but somewhat new to the realm of working on bikes.

also having trouble with the charging system on my xj. any ideas? drains battery. will run for a day or two but no more. have to plug in the old trickle charger every night. replaced stator and rectifier (the little spring loaded magnets) and has a brand new battery

    thanks

For your charging system - start here:

    http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/7795/

For fork seals - the search tool of this forum has a lot of info relating to tools, tips, tricks and how to. Take the time to read through them and then if you have a specific question post it here.

Good luck and welcome to the forum. Also - please add your bike to your signature so we know what you are working on.

Are you referring to the item in the picture near the bottom of the first page of this link?? http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... ushes.html
If you are, it's not a rectifier and the "magnets" are actually carbon brushes which contact the rotor to power the rotor. The rectifier is located beside the TCI under the side cover opposite the battery.

Pull the Alternator Cover and have a look at the Alternator Brushes.

Dozens of bikes were cured of "Charging Problems" after getting new brushes in there ... if yours are out of spec (10mm / low limit).

Next: Fuse Panel. If you still have the Original ... time to upgrade to a more reliable fuse panel is probably in order. Many OEM Fuse Panels are starting to fail without warning.

Stick an inline fuse kit or two in with your tools.

You'd better check the Plastic Connector that clips the Voltage Regulator to the wiring harness. Look to see if there's evidence of overheating around the Red Wire. That area deformed or melted some means your Voltage Regulator needs to be tested.
