    Hi there xj riders,

I'm new to the site. I picked up a 83 xj650 maxim, it's great. I have put a new tire on the rear. When I got it all back together the rear break won't engage...?

The odd thing is when I take it apart 1/2 way it works. Then I tighten everything up and the peddle spins the gear nub and nothing happens.

Any help would be so appreciated.

I just put new drag bars and a bomber seat on her and am dying to test those out.

    Thanks Xj's

Possible problem are delaminating brake shoes or the pedal is not indexed to the shaft. There is a small dot in shaft that lines up with mark on pedal here's what I have on my bike. If you zoom in you can just see the small punch mark on shaft at 12 o'clock position shaft image.jpg

There is also a knob on the end of the brake rod, at the bottom of the drum lever. You may need to adjust that for the brake to engage.

Put new shoes in first... Yeah, you're dying to ride-- I get that. Get the bike to go safely isn't the issue--get the bike to STOP safely is.

    Put new brakes in first.

That way when you're dying to just go fast, you won't be going fast just to die.....
