Title says it all. Trying to find a new switch or barring that, the correct part number and a good place to order it from. Just tonight mine broke "on" ... so I can actually lock my front wheel and remove the key, and the bike stays running.

Short term, I was going to wire in a deadman's switch, but they're a lot harder to hide on a motorcycle than on the car. Barring that, until I fix the switch (or someone recommends a good kill switch option) I'm just going to pull the main fuse and lock it up.

Can anyone confirm - pulling the main fuse is enough to stop it from draining the battery, right?

    Thanks in advance

Yes. Or just disconnect the positive or the negative post from the battery.

We do have complete aftermarket switches in stock that are correct for your bike:

HCP18093 OEM rebuilt IGNITION MAIN SWITCH, with built-in steering lock mechanism. Has 2 individual wire harnesses leads with correct color wires and plastic end connectors. Fits 1982 XJ750 Maxim and all 1981-83 XJ750 Seca models. This unit has a brand new lock cylinder and housing and a rebuilt steering lock mechanism. Comes with two keys. NOTE: a $ 50.00 core charge applies to this item, and a re-usable, same-model, complete main switch must be returned for the core charge to be refunded (key not required). This core charge will be refunded when an original core is returned.

Maybe the power wire is melted somewhere between switch and main wire harness. Can you shut off with kill switch?

Yes, that I can do - the kill switch on the right switchgear still shuts the engine off, but when I turn the key, the power (lights and all) stays on. I haven't dug into the harness at all; I just figured it was something broken in the switch itself. I mean, I can lock the front tire, and remove the key, and the bike will stay running unless I hit the kill switch.

That is one seriously thorough write up. I love this community.

You didn't happen to put in a common buss fuse box some 9 years ago did you?

    That's so oddly specific. ;)

I didn't put one in, but it would be about 9 years ago that I was probably asking about doing exactly that. (The original barrel fuse box was falling apart; it was comically zip-tied in a road-side repair to just to keep it going) But ultimately, yes, my Dad did put one in a couple years ago - this was his bike until just a couple months ago when I adopted it.

    Also, wow. You remember this?

Well thanks to our administrator SnoSherriff it is easy to check any members previous post, which was easy in your case as you only had a few. I wish I could take credit for a good memory, but as I get older I am lucky to remember what I did yesterday.

So if he installed a fuse box with a common input and several outputs this is likely your issue. You can use that style although it is not prefered as you have to separate the main by itself to an in line fuse and pay attention to input wires vs. output wires for the fuse box. Otherwise, you are basically hotwiring the bike.

Here is a good link for installing the preferred blade style fuse box:

Actually, that looks almost exactly like what he did. To the point that I'm going to ask him if he got the info and parts from that link, because he even mentioned the bent the spades on one side to make it fit. He was pretty psyched about having found a good write-up to guide him through it (even more so when it worked).

I figure the issue has to be in my keyswitch, because the bike has operating normally all along - although the fork-lock started getting tricky this season, and then Monday night, I stopped for gas, turned the key to kill the bike and ... it didn't. Turned the keyswitch to off, removed the key, and it was still running.

Talked to Dad. He did order the fuse kit from xj4ever. So, your reputation precedes you and your SEO tactics are working, because if my Dad found you without my help or a literal trail of breadcrumbs then you are indeed doing something right. ;)
