Some months ago, I bought an "advertised" XJ650 OEM seat off EBAY. My bike has the King/Queen seat and I was thinking about using the second seat as a swap out when desired. When it arrived I unboxed it, gave it a once over and set it aside. Recently I decided to pop it on the bike and give it ago but no joy. The tongue on the bottom front of the seat pan doesn't have enough clearance to slide under the back of the tank. i wiggled, jiggled, pushed and pulled but nothing I did allowed it to fit properly. Now I'm wondering if perhaps this came off an XS something or other but I'm not familiar with fitment details for the bikes.

That appears to be an XJ650 seat PAN, based on the release mechanism style. Cast into the pan is a set of letters/numbers, if you have those it would be able to make a positive ID.

They dont appear to be. The K/Q seats fits nicely and slides right in. The standard seat won't slide forward at all

the plan is to have the seat recovered. I had cut away some of the covering to see if it would allow me to move it forward in place. Interesting that the pattern on top of the XS seat looks similar to mine.

Maybe I need to file down the front tab on the seat a tad and see if it helps.

That’s an XJ650 seat with the 4h7 number. Same as the one I have

There's something odd about the covering on the front of mine. I think its probably the cause of it not fitting properly. Since im going to recover it anyway, i think its time for a little surgery.

After a closer look and a bit of surgery, I believe I found the issue. The foam at the front was curled under keeping it from resting forward on the tank. I didn't notice it until I cut away some of the covering.

I removed the entire cover and foam and was able to seat the pan properly and lock into place. It still took a little finagling. Just a tight fit. The new cover is on it's way.
