Shift lever moves freely up and down and is not actually causing a shift. i tried rocking the bije back and forth in whatever gear it's in(Pretty sure it's second cause i can get it to start if i roll it) but its not engaging any gears. I rode it away from work and then 500 feet into my ride home it just stop shifting. I'm fairly new so if you could break down any answers like you're explaining to a child that would be great lol.
I've read it might be a c-clip/circlip/circle clip? if it is how can i find out how to replace it and what tools will i need?

    Drain the oil.
    Remove the shift lever.
    Remove the shift cover.
Look at the shift mechanism for a broken spring.

Now, I am not saying that this is what I think, know, or have heard to be true, but....

Someone may or may not have had this issue in the past and, after giving her the old tap tap taperoo for a week, decided "F it" and used a putty knife to !!EXTREMELY GENTLY!! tap it into the gasket material to separate it. I did not That someone did not leave any marks on the clutch cover, YMMV.

On the left you'll see a kind of star-shaped wheel (the shift drum). In front of that wheel is the shifting pawl. The pawl engages the shift drum, and has a spring on it to allow the pawl to both engage with and disengage from the shift drum when the shift lever is moved. There is a spring on that pawl. Is it intact and connected at both ends?

There is also a spring on the shift shaft. Is that Intact?

    Hold on....
I thought something looked funny. The shift pawl is.....umm.....not in the correct orientation at all. The hooked end should be over the shift drum, not facing the rear of the engine.

It looks to me like the shaft to the 2nd shift lever (the bit with the teeth) has split in twain. No bueno.

Here's a parts fiche to show you how things should be. http://www.yamahapartsnation.com/oemparts/a/yam/500421a8f8700209bc787340/shift-cam-fork

Unfortunately the 2nd shift lever is NLA from Yamaha. You could start a conversation with Chacal to see if he might have one, otherwise put a post in the wanted section both here, and at XS11.com (the part is the same as on the xs1100), and search Ebay.

In that diagram are you talking about the top part or the bottom part that's not how it should be? What number specifically? Sorry I'm not good with terminology

    Yes. Does it shift now?
Was the way it was in the first set of photos the way you found it when you pulled the cover?

No, the shifter used to move freely(but not engage) but now it's not moving at all. Is this progress? Lol

Now...make sure that it all stays the way it's supposed to . Check the cover and the holes the shafts fit into for cracks. I want to think that the prior owner had it apart and put it back together wrong, but if he had it the way your first picture shows it really should have not been able to shift at all.

The gears have to be in the right orientation to get the gearbox to shif through all of them. Turn the rear wheel as you shift to help them be able to line up.
Remember that you have 1 down, 4 up. Shift pattern, 1 N 2 3 4 5. Engaging neutral takes a half-shift, so you will go right past it when you are testing.

You shouldn't need to open it back up unless you find that it still won't go through all of the gears.

Of the transmission gears? Turn the rear wheel with your free hand. It won't take much movement.

What do I do with the clutch and shifter? Anything before or after? Or during?

Also I accidentally grabbed 5w20 instead of 20w50 just now at the auto store, is that a big deal?

Yes, particularly in the summer. Exchange it. Rotella 15W40 is nice, but 20W50 is good too. JASO MA certified oil only though.

Sorry to bother you again kmoe, I but I can't quite seem to change the orientation. Does the shifting assembly need to be open while I turn the wheel? That way I can set the teeth on the right hubs?
