    Another out-in-left-field question, the kind that could only come from me..... :D

    Okay, when I look on eBay at Yamaha XJ-series bikes, the VIN number is always expressed as something like this (regardless of what state the seller might located in):

    JYA5N8005CA011110

    The above VIN is from a 1982 XJ650 Maxim, but........here's the part that I can't figure out.

    The first three positions of the VIN are (I'm pretty sure on this) the Universal Manufacturer ID of the "vehicle", in this case the "JYA" stands for "Yamaha of Japan".

    The next 3 positions represent the bike MODEL, in this case being "5N8" which is, indeed, the production code ID for a 1982 XJ650 Maxim.

    The last six positions is the unique "serial number" for this particular bike, in this case being "011110"....and those numbers are assigned sequentially at the factory and provides a unique number to each individual frame that comes down the assembly line. I note from the XJCD that 1982 XJ650 Maxim models started with serial number "000101", so in fact this particular bike is the 11,109th XJ650J built for the US marketplace.

    In fact, on the steering head post of this bike should be stamped 5N8-011110 (as should be on the engine case, if the bike has the original engine).

    BUT what are the "other" number/letters in the VIN represent---the ones that I've highlighted in red below?

    JYA5N8005CA011110

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Well if JYA5N8005CA011110 decoded shows 4-8 as Unknown that isn't much help. According to the service manual for my Mitsubishi Starion those all have a purpose. For instance JA3BC54H1FZ400001 shows #4 is Other, a B there indicates Manual Seat Belts. Number 5 is the Line, C=Starion. Number 6 is the Series, 5=Premium. Number 7 is Body type, 4= 2 door hatchback, and number 8 is Engine, H=2.6 liter turbo. The 12th digit is the Destination code, Federal=4, California=5 (for emissions I suppose). It doesn't show what other options mean but the rest are the same as Yamaha.

    Yeah, it wasn't very helpful, but it was the first site to pop up in Google last night. However, in that site's defense, each manufacturer is allowed to use digits 3-8 however they want as long as they follow the rules on what digits are allowed and not allowd (I, O, and Q). Here's an example detailed position information based on how GM does it:

    1 = Country of Origin
    2 = Manufacturer
    3 = Division
    4 = Restraint System
    5 = Series
    6 = Body style 1
    7 = Body style 2
    8 = Engine Information
    9 = Check Digit
    10 = Model Year
    11 = Aseembly Plant
    12-17 = Mfg specific serial number

    So, JYA5N8005CA011110 would tell you that it's a Japanese origin Yamaha (maybe even an American division within Yamaha if there is such a thing) manufactured vehicle. However, between digits 3 and 9 (the check digit) Yamaha simply injected the first part of the old style VIN (5N8-xxxxxx) and some padding zeros into the new one. So there's nothing to really decode. The check digit and model year digit are of course valid for legal reasons, It's anyone's guess what plant "A" might be. Then you have the serial number.

    You guys have a subject going that I have an interest in.

    I have a 82 xj750 seca.
    Bike is titled under said eng/frame numb.
    The guys in texas wont inspect the bike w/o valid vin.

    I have most of the numbers w/ the exception of 3.
    If what was said is true above then you guys could help.

    the vin I hav is JYA5G2-???-CA107546
    Three question marks I have no clue.

    If someone could point me in the right direction I can check the VIN possiblities with my insurance database,
    That darn sticker just started to rub away...

    Thanks for the help ahead of time

    Well, according to the above, the ??? should be "00?" , with the last ? being a check digit, which from my research, is always based upon the actual serial number portion of the VIN. That check digit could be 0-9 or A-Z. So your insurance company would have to try 36 combinations, starting with "000" all the way to "00Z" and you should hit paydirt that way!

    If what I said above is true, then the first two question marks would be 00, then the third would have to be the check digit.

    So it's look like it would be JYA5G2003CA107546, assuming I calculated the check digit right.

    What method are you using to calculate the check digit = 3?

    The double zeros should be correct.

    No, the check digit is based on all the other VIN numbers, not just the last 6. It's an algorithm that transliterates each letter into an equivalent numerical value from 1 through 9. Then after then VIN has been converted entirely to numeric digits, each position's value is multiplied by that position's weight value. Next, you take the products of the last step for each position and add them together and devide by 11. Whatever remainder you get is your check digit. If you get 10, replace it with X.

    Oh and the check digit can only be 0-9 and X.

    Good golly, Miss Molly. You don't happen to have that algorithim handy, do you (the conversion of letters to their numerical values, and the weights assigned to each position)?

    It is a CANADIAN model 1982 XJ650 RJ (Seca) model. The serial numbers for this model started at 000101 and moved up from there. If you stll have the original engine in the bike, the engine number should be 5V3-xxxxxx, where "xxxxxx" is the same number stamped on the right side of the steering head pipe.

    Sorry Chacal, Guess I'll keep it. Still waiting for the title from my brother.Ran it with an X instead of 9 in the check digit and it shows valid.

    How do I check the engine serial #?

    Engine serial number should match what's stamped on the frame steering neck pipe, right side. For your bike it should be 5N8-xxxxxx.

    Your "complete VIN" will be in the format of:

    JYA5N800(then the check digit, X or 9)CA(then the 6-digit serial number).

    Note how the right side steering neck stamping and the engine number are just a "stripped down" version of the entire VIN, which makes sense, since the VIN is a "government ID number" while the Frame ID-Serial Number combo is the manufacturers "bike ID", and for the mfg., only the bike model/frame model (5N8 in your case) and the unique production number of that bike/frame model (xxxxxx) is all that is needed to identify that unique bike.........

    Actually, for some bikes it gets a tad more complicated, as many different bike MODELS shared the same basic FRAME, and thus you can have different MODEL numbers that all share the same FRAME ID NUMBER.

    It may be helpful, at this point in your classes, to think of the MODEL ID as the number used by the marketing/sales department, and the FRAME ID as the number used by the engineering/production/parts departments.

    This model-frame ID "discrepancy" mainly applies to non-North American model bikes, as all of the US/Canada XJ-series bikes from this era use the same frame ID and model ID which the EXCEPTION of the 1983 750 Midnight Maxim, which has the following numbers:

    USA version: FRAME ID: 22R MODEL ID: 33N
    CANADIAN version: FRAME ID: 22T MODEL ID: 33U

    For those "curiosity kills the cat" type of fellas out there, yes, the 750 Midnight Max DID (logically) share the same frame ID with a 1983 750 Maxim (22R) but---obviously---not the same model ID (Maxim = 22R model ID, Midnight Maxim = 33N model ID).

    In 1984, there is a Canadian-only XJ750MK model, and I'm not sure what it is, but it went back to sharing the same 22T frame and model number format as with all the other North American XJ models.

    CONCLUSION: if you're not confused yet, you haven't studied carefully enough.

    "33F" is a 1984 XJ900RL model, frame numbers started at -001101, and the MODEL ID is 47L.

    However, 33F is ALSO listed as a 1983 XJ900U model, frame number starting at -000101, and that bike is also a MODEL ID is 33F.

    Both of these models are listed as non-USA, non-Canadian, non-Japanese market bikes.

    That's as far as I can go with that one!

    Keep an eye on ebay... I pick up the odd part for mine from there which incidently is also a 33F but mine is an 83

    I put my numbers in the VIN decoder posted on the first page of this thread and it said Oceania and New Zealand but invalid on pretty much the rest of it.... That is based in the VIN plate that they put on it this year

    Getting very worried here now. When I tried to get my xj700n re-registered here in Spain the bloke dealing with the paperwork said there was a discrepancy with the numbers. He wanted 1600 euros to do the job which is a lot of money so I suggested he go forth and multiply.

    Not exactly sure what the problem,was my Spanish is not to good, but I gathered it was something to do with numbers not matching. If that is the case then I have invested a lot of time money and effort in a no no not ever.

    The VIN number on the frame is JYA1F6001FA000387
    and the engine number is IFG000387. Should the last 6 numbers match the engine ?

    He sounds like a shyster. Did he bother to explain to you what the problem was, or did he just offer to "fix" it for 1600 euros? If it were the latter, I'd report him. He's obviously using his position to blackmail you into paying him money to make your "problem" go away. I have no tolerance for people like him. Frickin' crooks!

    I think he tried to explain what the problem was but he spoke no English my Spanish was limited and I did'nt like the way his arms waved about when he talked. This is Spain and customer service is a world away from the sort of things you enjoy in the states.

    Mick, the info that I have indicates that XJ700 models were only made for the North American market, and therefore your bike is an import?

    Anyway, the XJ700N 1985 Maxim should have a frame id beginning with 1FG (not 1F6....the number '6" on the frame steering head---or on the paper tag, depending on what you are using to identify the entire VIN of the bike---is being misread and that is causing the conflict with the engine ID of 1FG000387, which IS a correct number.

    A stamped-into-metal letter "G" can easily be mis-read as the number "6", as can a printed letter G, if not viewed carefully and up-close.

    Your correct VIN should read JYA1FG001FA000387......or else I'm missing something.

    Thanks Chacal

    Yes the bike was an import brought over from the states into the UK in 93, I brought to it Spain in 2005. And it looks as if I will have trouble with the re reg because the various export documents show JYA1F6 though the MOT certificates show it as JYAIFG. I may be lucky and convince the pen pushers it's a simple typo or a short sighted clerk somewhere, but I wont hold my breath.

    Maybe you could shoot an up-close photo of the frame ID or the VIN tag on the steering neck and take it with you to the registration office?

    JYA5k5004B8012552
    But when I plug it in to the vin decoder it says the 4 is invalid.
