no crank no start xj750

    ive got a wiring mess of a bike i just got a battery for it and alot of spliced wires i turn the key and nothing moves ive got a few plugs not plugged in but for the most part everythings somewhere. i need help to get even just the gauge cluster to start, any ideas ?

    Original fuse box with glass fuses? If so, the first thing would be to replace that with one of the blade type ones that XJ4Ever sells.

    Make sure it's in neutral. The starter switch will not activate the starter if it's not in neutral.

    im pretty sure its in neutral not entirly sure ill double check but nothing turns on no lights no cluster

    Pics would help. Post 3 more times (nonsense posts in tis thread will do) and you can put photos in your post.
    Im particularly intrested in seeing what the wiring at the fusebox looks like.

    You should take the time to do those posts and get the pic on here.

    If not, look around inside the bike wiring and see if you can find the mates to the connectors that are missing. Some could be missing a relay or diode pack (maybe).

    As the others have states above, a huge no go issues is the fuse box that is stock on the bike. It needs to be checked over, cleaned and see if power is making it from one side of the fuse to the other.

    Not too sure what your background is for wrenching on bikes, not too sure if you have the tools for trouble shooting. So let us know a little about your exsperiance and that will help us in pointing out what might help.

    Im not too familiar with my bikes I started in automotive and am fairly comfortable and can turn a wrench but I know little to nothing about bikes

    Fuse box is pretty busted it’s held closed with electrical tape and as far as fuses go it’s got 2/4 just for ignition and the signals

    Looks like some in-line fuses replaced the box fuses. I would rework all that with a blade style box for sure.

    There is no ECU.
    The only test that most people can do for the TCI is to swap it out, or sent it to someone who has the same model of XJ to see if it will fire their bike. I'm 90% certian that your wiring problem will solve the no-start issue, so let's start there.

    I found a blown fuse and one more missing I’m going to replace them and see how far that gets me

    I switched the fuses around and now the gauge cluster turns on so I need to replace that fuse but since that turns on the horn and turn signals also work still not cranking tho

    I doubt that it fried. The self-canceler is pretty robust, and has nothing to do with the ignition circuit.

    I’m a little stumped I resurfaced all the grounds so they get a good connection and cleaned electrical connections with some electric spray and I’m not seeing progress I checked the starter button it has good continuity through the wires any idea that could help ?

    Use a screwdriver to bridge the two big bolts on the starter relay.
    What happens?

    It cranks perfectly no clanking or weird noises sounds like it should

    Also my big headlight doesn’t turn off and I don’t see an option on the switch to turn it off ?

    If it's a Maxim the headlight turns off when you push the start button. If it's a Seca you have a problem

    Is the neutral light working now that you have fuses?

    Try engaging the starter with the clutch pulled in and side stand up

    US motorcycles built after 1978 are required to have the headlight on whenever the engine is running. There is no headlight switch, other than the one to change from low-beam to high-beam.

    OK. Time to work backwards from the starter relay to the starter switch.
    On the starter relay there are two small wires with a plug. Unplug that from the wiring harness and use two lengths of wire to connect the starter relay directly to the battery. If nothing happens then the relay is faulty. If the starter turns then we'll need to look at the safety interlock circuit, and maybe for a broken wire.

    So when I use the screwdriver u hear what sounds like a fuse popping and dash turns off and the only way to turn it back on is to disconnect the battery completely and then the key works again

    tested it a bit more as in I pressed the button some more and now it’s consistently trying to crank it clicks like a car with a bad starter the dash turns off which I don’t think is unusual but it doesn’t crank and still makes the sparking noises

    I cranked it a few more times and the relay is clicking like crazy but it won’t crank
