    I have a few questions:
    - How do I know if it is an RJ?
    - I was going to start with a new battery, new fuel, new spark plugs. Anything else I should do before first crank?

Should I also do an oil change first and change the filters. Or should I get running and then change the oil and air filter?

Get it running first. Sadly I suspect you will need to strip the bowls off the carbs at a minimum, clean out the jets especially the starting enrichment jets, and the progression hole drillings in each carb.

    The 650 Seca has the "R" in the model code - XJ650RJ is a 1982 XJ650 Seca.
The Maxim would not have the "R", so an XJ650J is a 1982 XJ650 Maxim.

Also the frame code (part of VIN) would be different - the RJ would include "5V2". Maxim 650's would be "4K1" (80&81) or "5N8" (82&83)

Fer feck's sake take the plugs out and squirt a bit of oil down the bores before turning it over.
