I have a 1981 xj seca I would like to sell or trade. I purchased the bike to create a cafe racer. I later found out the bike is the second bike of the production line. The bike is extremely clean needing only a few things to get it up and running (battery, frond disc break, and to clean the tank) The bike has been sitting since 1981 and has 475 miles on the engine. I am looking to get around $4000.00 obo.

Carburetor bottom shield, Turn signals, front fender, front fairing, right side cover, etc? Do you have all of these to go with that would make it a time capsule bike?
I’m curious as to how you know it’s the second bike off the production line as well.

Un fortunately I don't have those parts. The Vin is 000002. So not a time capsule bike but probably the closest thing out there. Or the closest thing i can find hence the 4k, not knowing what its truly worth due to nothing like it on the market. Obviously willing to take offers if interested.

Except that to our current best knowledge the first one was 000101. So until I see the actual serial number on the frame and title, I will not believe the stated number to be accurate.

I also mentioned I am very green, so i do not know where to find the number on the frame, but will gladly add pictures if needed.

I have now; very interesting. The only bikes that I know of that start at s/n 000001 are the XJ650 Midnight Maxims (both the USA and Canadian versions), so this is something new. Of course, what research reveals and what real-life reveals can always differ a bit..........

If I recall, this bike has been noticed by people on this website previously, perhaps it was on eBay or craigslist?

Personally, if I was the owner of this bike, I would find and install all the missing pieces (as noted above) and get it running, tip-top shape......and then slap a $10K or so price tag on it. Assuming it is verified as real, a 500-mile, oddball low-serial number bike which is complete and runs is no longer just a "1981 XJ550 Seca", it now moves into a collectible work of art, a museum piece, and its value increases exponentially.

Also, that title looks pretty fresh........when was it issued? What did the original title state? Did you (Mattyp) have this title issued, and if so, what process did u go thru? Did it have a previous title? Did you purchase it from an individual or a shop?

And, what are the titling requirement for bikes of this age in Idaho?

Not trying to be a snit, but these are the questions that a "real money" buyer will want to know about/verify.

Oh no offense taken really. I know the price i have listed is probably too much, but i don't know the worth, someone says 1000 then the bike is lower than what anyone else has seen, so i am just lost in the process trying to find my way out. I purchased the bike at auction. After 30 days the auction sends the title through the Idaho DMV that sends it to me. I was issued a new title. I can contact the auction company to see what they have to have to sell the bike as well if they have any insight on more of the history.

That history will make all the difference in the final price that you get. The better documented your machine is, the more likely someone will be to pay a premium for it.

Thank God you came to your senses and didn't take a saw blade to it. Even if it isn't the number 2 bike, I'm sure it's worth more now than after an "update". There are plenty of beater bikes out there that will make better projects.
