1982 XJ1100, finally found one

    Had to go back after the tank. My old tried and true didn't work out on this tank or my second XJ1100 either. Have it sitting full of white vinegar now and have tank sealer on order. Will have to make three seals for the petcocks and the fuel level unit, don't want them getting all messed up. Hate to use the sealer, they say they work with all types of fuel, but not to sure if they ever do well with the ethanol in the Midwest. Better to spend the extra money now so I don't have to keep changing fuel filters and taking the carbs out.

    Anyone of a good pic of how the air box on the "split air box" style should be mounted to the frame on the rear mounting points? My second Xj1100 has the other style air box that has three screws, and you remove the filter from the left side, easy. My first one has the split air box that has four thumb screws and the bottom cover pulls out of the right side to replace the air filter. Both bikes have different air filters as well. Thanks.

    Reading some of the above posts, I don't think the 1100 engine is a hard pulling engine. I do think it is a nice, consistent power bike, but nothing to be swapping out motors for. I love to work on these older bikes, but for power and performance it is really hard to beat the FI bikes with all the newer designs and progress in engineering. Okay, not all engineering progress is good. lol

    Had to do a better job on the gas tank. I think I missed that almost all what I thought was rust in the tank was gas varnish. So, as the fuel sat in the tank and moved around while I was riding, it started to break up the varnish and then corrupt the carbs again. Even though the fuel filter, almost like the filter didn't even do anything. I guess the varnish was so fine that is passed right through.

    After hitting the tank with white vinegar, I noticed that lots of brown still in the tank. I threw a bottle of B12 chemtool in there and that started to do the trick. I added a gal of acetone and finished rinsing the tank, until 90+ % of the brown was gone. Vacuum and compressed air to finish up the job. Made some petcock and fuel level hole seals and hit the tank with POR 15. Looks really good inside and have it sitting in the sun for the next 96 hrs, or so say the directions.

    Have the other CJ1100 number 2 tank soaking while the first is drying. Hoping this take care of the issue once and for all.

    What size tin of POR15 did you use @Timbox

    I went with the 16 OZ can, used half of it. I rotated the tank every five min for half an hr to make sure the coverage was good. After six hr, I removed the petcock blockers and set the tank in the sun. Directions say let dry for 96 hrs. I have a bore cam and all parts were covered in the tank.
