#2 carb popping

    hello all i am new.
    i have an 85 xj 700 x and when i got it not runninig. i got it running and it seem to run good. After 1500 mile #2 carb started popping before that i would have on first start a clank noise and the engine would not turn over anymore. After the bike sat for about 5 min if would turn over and start and about the same time the clank stop happening it started the popping. pls help this is my 1st bike and i think i am in love.

    sounds like a plug problem (cheap quick fix)
    or fuel delivery... longer, cheap fix.

    first, I would check the plug to see if it is fouling out when it is popping. if it's black and fouling, it might be a bad plug or sticking float.
    if the plug is pure white, you arent getting fuel and it could be a plugged jet, emulsion tube or a float level too low.
    you might check the float height first by getting some clear tubing and put it on the nipple at the bottom of the bowl. turn the drain screw facing out and towards you and let it fill the tube. once it stops, close the screw and see how high the fuel is... it should sit right around where the bowl screw and bowl meet.
    if it is low, you need to adjust your float... if it keeps coming and wont stop, you have a stuck needle.
    quick searches of the forum will show how to take care of that.
