650 revs when turned right

So I was doing some clean up and changing grips on my 650. I noticed the throttle cable was out of its keeper down by the neck so I popped it back in. now when I turn to the right it revs like crazy. I threw a new cable on it and it still does it. Take the cable back out of the keeper and it is fine. I have the throttle cable adjusted so there is just a little bit of movement at the grip before you get throttle. So is that keeper for something else? Is the cable maybe routed wrong? Something im not seeing?

 

Sounds like it's "catching" because of incorrect routing of the cable. Easiest way to check the routing is to take the tank off and run an extended line to the tank, start the bike, and slowly move the handlebar to the right while watching the cable routing. Should be able to figure out exactly where it's getting kinked that way.

Not sure what you mean by "keeper". The 650 Seca T cable runs underneath the tank, is not held by anything on the front forks. I would suspect that the Maxim would be the same, but no experience with the Max so I'm not 100% sure.

Anyone with a 650 Maxim want to chime in?

 

the old cable had a somewhat obvious kink in the portion hanging out in front of the bike when I turned it. No obvious kink with the new cable although you can tell it bends slightly tighter when in the keeper as opposed to no in the keeper. I did have the tank off to watch for kinks

the cable appears to be routed correctly from the engine out under the tank compared to the pics I have found.

the keeper is just a wire loop

the keeper is only a half inch or so from where the cable runs on its own and there is nothing else near by that could reach it so I assumed it is for the throttle cable.

What did we figure out on this topic? I was backing my bike off the curb yesterday and discovered the same thing. Its not s super rev though. It only revs to about 2500-3000 if turned all the way right....

 

got the diagram from fitz and the cable is routed correctly. With the new cable mine isn't reving very high either going to look at it again today and see.
haven't had time to do much lately between doc appointments and getting ready to have my shoulder chopped open and fixed.

 

Just a thought. Did you install the new cable dry? The cable should be lubricated before installation, heck of a lot easier than while in place.

 

sounds to me like you need to give it a tad more free play . Either at the carb end or at the grip. You have stock bars right?

 

yep it was lubed up before install and im running stock bars.

I ended up loosening up the cable at the control all the way . Then I started it up cranked the bars to the right. I adjusted it until it started to rev then backed it off till it settled down. I gave it a touch more slack for good measure and locked it in place. You can tell you are gaining and loosing slack at the grip as you turn the bars but it doesn't rev on me anymore.
