82 1100 Swing Arm Centering Question

Tonight I changed my U-Joint Dust Boot. I took off the chrome caps and took off the 2 27mm Jam nuts. backed out both swing arm pivot screws. I was reading in the Service Manual that there should be no more than .062 between both sides of the arm and the frame. I could not get a caliper up in there to measure the gap. I tryed using a feeler gauge but I couldn't really get a good measurement. I put the Swing arm bolts back in after I got the boot changed and set them about where they were. I then just snugged them up to load the bearings alittle. I don't have a torq wrench that goes low to 3.6 to 4.3 ft lbs. How critical is this measurement and is there an easy way to get measurements with the back wheel in place. As far as the preload on the taper bearings in the swing arm. Should I get an inch pounds torq wrench and set at ? thanks for your help.
