    Hi,
I want to have my gas tank and side covers painted on my 82 XJ750 Maxim. The previous owner painted it and did a really bad job. Also, the red paint he used isn't close.

So, here is my question: How can I find a red paint code for my bike? I checked with my local auto parts store that mixes paint. They were able to scan the current color, but it's not correct in that it's too dark. I want the original red color if possible.

The guy said if I can find a PPG paint code, that would be best. But if I can find any paint code, he can cross-reference it and mix up the right color.

Have any of you dealt with red paint for an 82 XJ750 Maxim? If so, what code did you use? There are some codes online, but none that go back that far in years.

    Thank you!

    Ken

@chacal sells custom mixed pints - I believe in PPG system. That would be the easy button - just get a pint from him.

There are no real codes that cross reference to anything that I'm aware of.

The best solution would be to get the PPG from @chacal and have your shop use the PPG system for the entirety of the refinish job. That's top-shelf stuff. And the color would be correct.

Definition of paint system: Typically all the primers, basecoats, clearcoats, catalysts, reducers, etc. etc. are sold by a manufacturer as a system. That is, they want you to use all of their stuff. Some people can and do mix and match products, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you really know what you are doing.
