Hi all, new to motorcycles but I just bought a 82' XJ650. I've completed the MSF class and just need to learn to ride and work on this beauty.

The bike I bought had the motor swapped with the 750 motor. It has a throttle problem but does run. The cable seems too long and gets stuck open while riding. So I need to reroute the cable or replace it. Other than that it needs an instrument panel as the previous owner removed it.

I've browsed through the Overload Hour and plan on revisiting it many times. Any info or suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks.

lube the cable see if that helps.

with the clipon bars you have on there al your cables and brake hose(upper) are to long

your throttle cable should be Wire length = 37-1/4". with stock bars

maybe a turbo 650 cable would work. Wire length = 33-1/2".

you should restore the bike to original. 82 Seca is a sought after model

    no speedo?

Nice bike agree with XJ550H restore bike please dont cut the frame. But it looks really good I like the low bars , but hanging idle is not very good and no speedo could lead to tickets....

Unfortunately not. They seem super expensive so I don't know what I'm going to do there. Going to contact the previous owner to see if he still has it. Also found out that the headlight is not currently working in the taillight is constantly on, meaning that applying the brakes doesn't change it.
The previous owner did upgrade the fuse box as well so that makes things a bit easier.

The 650 seca was a one year bike in the US so parts can be expensive and hard to find. For the same reason you should save all the stock parts if you decide to modify it.

If you want to modify a bike and cut a frame look for a maxim bike that is a lot more common and parts are easy to find.

I'm not trying to cut it or do anything stupid eapecially hearing it's limited. I don't plan or really riding until I get those two things resolved. Hopefully the headlight is just a loose connection or something. I'm not super mechanical but I learn quick.

So found the problem with the brake light, at least the rear brake. When pressed it doesn't pull the sensor enough, have to adjust the spring a little.

Can someone possibly link me to a wiring diagram? The headlight assembly is a mess inside. Also have a few "extra" wires under the seat. In advance thanks for all the help.

@XJ550H makes sense. He didn't have any on the bike. Previous owner wanted to do a integrated light system. Turn signals in the lights. I don't know what I'll do yet.
