    Hi,

I am planning on doing a head swap due to valve cover leaking oil from the bolts being stripped, and a couple exhaust bolts being broken. I have a spare head, just curious if I can do the swap without pulling the motor.

Also, I know I'll have to replace the head gasket, redo the timing and valve lash. Is there anything else I have to look out for?

    Any insight is appreciated

If problem with current head is just few threads / bolts it would probably be easier to fix those. Few helicoils in there and you're good to go. Exhaust studs you can usually do without taking head out, might be possible for valve cover threads too.

Yes you can remove the head with engine in bike. If you want to go further it's not much more work to pull cylinders, hone them and do new rings and timing chain is right there too. If those are wear items you are concerned about. You would then need the cylinder base gasket and a couple rubber seals, can come as a kit.

Watch the tubing Yamaha put on the front cylinder studs to prevent corrosion doesn't end up in the crankcase.

While this is good advice, no work shuld be done before measuring and consulting the service manuals. Re-ringing an engine that already has good compression and isn't using oil is a waste of time and money. Re-ringing an engine that has out-of-round cylinders is also a waste of time and money.

Hey everyone, thanks for the advice. I went with just swapping the head with the spare the spare one I have route. Only one problem, I can't lift the old head off the cylinder studs. The head hits the frame where the horn and bracket goes. The manual even says the head can be removed if the horn bracket is removed, but the way its looking, thats not the case. Anyone run into this problem???? Here's a pic where the head is hitting the frame

Thanks for the reply. To do the helicoil, I would still need to remove the head correct? I don't see a way to get a drill over the bolt hole with the frame in the way.

Also, I'm trying to remove the head right now, and it hits the frame where the horn and bracket goes. Almost seems like I can't remove the head with it in the frame. Are there any maxim models where the engine needs to be pulled? I have an 82 xj650 yics motor
