First time working on a v-twin. Trying to set float levels on an '85 Virago XV1000. Is the curved shape of the float tang related the the fact the carbs/cylinders sit at an angled?

One of the these carbs is really giving me fits. I think I might have misshapen the tang so badly that it now is overflowing no matter what kind of adjustments I make.

    Thanks.

I had a similar problem with a 82 920 Virago. The problem was with the rear carb since it is at more of a angle. Best resluts were to wet set the floats when the carbs are at the angle ther are mounted at. Set them to 1 to 3 mm below the carb body . If the fuel level goes above the carb body it will flood . It did take several attempts to get it right but runs like a champ now.

Thanks for your response. What was your evidence of flooding?

I went back at this the next day and had better luck...as is often the case. I had misshapen the float tang enough that it really couldn't operate properly. My assessment is that the tangs on these Viragos need to maintain the proper curvature. I think that's related to the angle they sit at. I used the float from the carb that already had the level set as a template and just tried to match it up. After that it just took three or four more adjustments and I had it nailed.

Flooding or a extremly rich mixture has several key indicators.
    Black and sooty plug
    Popping through the exhaust
Exhaust fumes sting your eyes at idle
    Poor fuel mileage

You can save that float by bending the adjustment tang to match the other one. Then fine tune by wet setting the floats.
