Anyone like to see what a worn out sprocket looks like?

Hey Fitz....did you ever figure out/get more feedback on the "black vs. bright" issue on the 550 sprockets? The ones that I have (in the 44-, 45-, and 46-tooth versions) all come in a bright (silver-cad) finish except for one.....I was thinking of getting some of these powder-coated to a low gloss black finish IF that was original (which the OEM part number indicates they should be).....but I've never actually seen an original black one.............your learned opinion and thoughts?

 

Everyone that responded has a silver one no matter what year. My '83 has a 45T silver one, as does my '81 although that is KNOWN to not be original. I do OWN a brand-new NOS Yamaha 46T in black, which is what the parts book calls for for the '81, it's hanging on my garage wall until I need it. I have yet to find a 550 Seca with a black sprocket installed on it. We have a number of new 550 Seca owners that have joined us since we ran the survey, maybe I'll do it again.

I like the shoe print on it in the top picture, gives the sense they found it taking a stroll or something.

 

Bigfitz. Here's a black sprocket for you. I get a bunch of replacement parts, tires, battery, chains, through my friend that owns a Harley dealership. I don't know where he got this black sprocket. The original was silver.

 

That sprocket still has life left in it.. It still has teeth!!! could go for another .5 miles before the chain breaks

I like Bill's idea; put it on backwards and wear out the other side. I can't believe that someone who claims to know anything at all about motorcycles would try to sell that. Ranger, thanks! That is probably a "genuine replacement" Yamaha sprocket, THEY came in black (like I said, I have one.) But your ORIGINAL sprocket was silver, wasn't it? I would like to find just ONE example of an original sprocket being black, or even 46T for that matter. Out of curiosity though, how many teeth on the sprocket in the pic?

 

I nearly peed myself when I saw that listing! There is another seller offering a Heritage Sp emblem. Must be the ecial emblem is in a different auction.

+1 on that. I still can't find any hard evidence that the black sprockets were anything but replacement parts; it looks as though even the '81s came (to the States anyway) with 45T silver sprockets. I'm gonna use the black 46T I have on the all-black Seca just for looks.

 

45 teeth. I threw out the old sprocket when I replaced it. I didn't know there was a market for them on e-bay!

 

Thank you. Almost for sure you have a GEN-U-WINE Yammie replacement sprocket there. I've not seen any aftermarket ones in anything but silver.
