So I decided that before I really start relying on my bike to get me around on a regular basis, I should probably change my brake pads. After removing them, they look about done with, but they are wearing what looks to me to be very poorly.

Is this kind of wear normal, or is it indicative of a common problem? The caliper seems to pivot about the bolt pretty freely, so I don't think it's binding up anywhere, although that may be a completely different situation when the breaks are under load.

Perfectly normal - our brake pads aren't like the ones you'd see on cages. The "thicker on one side" shape is the way they come for these pads.

Those pads your holding have got tons of material left on them -- those two little grooves on the edge of the pad material are the wear bars, so those are nearly new from the looks of it.
