Can't figure this out.

I'm having trouble decoding the VIN. These are the numbers I still can see on the sticker. JYA52 8 CA00379. I know I'm missing a digit or two , just can't see them. The engraved number is 5V2 003791. From what I can decode, its a xj650 seca. But the bike is black and from a YCIS motor. Now if I'm understanding it correctly YCIS is a 750? It also has dual disc brakes on the front. My first thought was someone swapped some parts so I call Joe who is the original owner of the bike and he stated that he purchased it that way and never changed anything. He bought it for his son who stop riding after he started having seizures. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

 

Full VIN should be JYA5V2008CA003791 1982 XJ650RJ Seca model. What is the stamped number on the engine case (on the flat pad just above the clutch cover)?

 

YICS models are not only 750cc.

 

There were YICS-equipped 650 Secas, but it wouldn't have a 5V2 model prefix on the engine number.

The answer to chacal's question "What is the stamped number on the engine case (on the flat pad just above the clutch cover?)" will solve the mystery. I strongly suspect it's had an engine transplant.

PO may have bought it that way, but it didn't come in black either.

One thing's for sure, the poor thing needed rescuing.

 

Yeah, that's a 1982 XJ650RJ Seca (non-turbo). There's a few of us that have one, and for being a one-year fairly uncommon bike, they sure are showing up all over the place all of a sudden.

Dave, remember that in '83 and even '84 Yamaha still had 650 Secas coming out their 650 Secas. They were almost giving them away; my PO's brother got his (now mine) for something like $1300 out the door, which was nearly half price.

Heck, I paid considerably more than that for my Norton some 10 years earlier.

There are quite a few 650 Secas out there; most of them got abused into the ground. UNFORTUNATELY, there aren't very many Seca 650 EXHAUST SYSTEMS left to be unearthed.

Dude, you gotta find somebody to let you ride a properly tuned 550.
