I was given a box of carb parts, which I have since succeeded in rebuilding. My question is properly tuning them to be put back on the bike. I know so little I don't know where to start. I hear of float levels, vacuum adjustment etc. Do i mount them on the bike and adjust there or do i need to build one of those stands with surgical tubing i have seen pictures of?

The whole process of cleaning and adjusting the carbs are in the following post..

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=44642.html

It is part of the wonderful and informative write ups by Len @ XJ4Ever.com. The link is at the top right of the forum pages. Not only do they carry about every part for the vintage bikes, but have amassed a world of technical knowledge to browse through. Get yourself a manual for your bike, it also is a "must have" for all the how to's and technical know hows.

You will be told that the valve clearances will have to be in spec before you can final tune the carbs...

Take you time and don't rush it, cause that will lead to a redo once or twice on these bikes, and trust me, the carbs are all but fun once, twice and three times are just a pain in the arse....

    hope this helps

    In order:

Carbs surgically clean; and bench sync'ed. O-rings and "wear items" inspected and/or replaced as needed. Mixture screws at 2.5 turns out to begin.

Float levels WET SET, individually, to spec. The link was posted for you above.

VALVE CLEARANCES IN SPEC. (Show stopper.)

Put carbs back on bike; warm it up then:

Running vacuum sync (with YICS blocked if applicable.)

    Mixture tweaking.

IN ORDER. Don't skip any or it won't work.

If we knew what bike you're working on, it would help. (Put it in your sig.) Some XJs have Mikunis, some have Hitachis, a lot have YICS but yet a good number do not.

    Whatcha workin' on?

Cool. We love a good 550 around these parts.

Try this: Go to the menus in the upper left.

    Select "my account."

Then, in the new menu that will appear there, under Information, select "my profile information."

One of the items that you will see is a "My Signature" block, where you can input up to 255 characters. It goes there; bike, miles, mods, etc. Look at mine or many others.

Then click "save changes" down at the bottom.
