I figure at least one of you databases of information would have experience of this one, - I'm looking for a tacho, any tacho, from any bike that can be wired into my 750 Maxim J. as long as it has the correct rev range and tells me the speed of my motor.
Mine had the dash removed by the PO.

unfortunately (in my opinion) your bike had the atari unit, thus it's an electronic tach, which is generally a bit pricier.

here is a general purpose one a member used on his seca 750 which had the atari

but any electronic tach may work, because there's no ratios or anything to deal with, just a sensor that says then the crank has made a revolution.

    just givin ya the basics

Acewell, Visteon, Dakota Digital (and quite a few others) all make updated instrument systems for bikes. The trick is knowing how to wire them into place. For your purposes, you would be best served pressing another Yamaha cluster into service as it will usually bolt right in and play nice with the electrical system. If all goes well, I might even have a spare 750J cluster to help you out. You could even use the 550 cluster (82 and up), 650 cluster ('82 and up), or the Seca cluster, all will bolt in. I'm partial to the 750J, I like the style. What is your grand plan for the bike?

Thanks for that, but some don't read high enough - or too high?, I don't know what high enough is for my model, I was thinking breakers yard really.

Thanks for the offer but I'm in the UK, and theres no way any cluster is going to bolt in there any more, not after the butchering it recieved by the PO.
I was thinking more of a single (electronically driven) rev counter/tacho from any other bike - maybe something a bit more modern like a Diversion if they use electronic tacho's, as its now using a mini Bates type speedo and instument cluster (just indicator warning, neautral light and high beam), and the rest of the redundant wiring has been cut out/joined/spliced etc - it took me a whole day just to tidy it up and replace the block connecters with proper soldered/heatshrinked (?) joints. At least he left a lot of the wires labelled.
The bike will not be going back to standard anyway - I like the rat look. As for the grand plan, it will just evolve into what it becomes, or bursts into flames as a result of an electrical fault
    Theres pics in my gallery.

It's going to be a trick finding an inexpensive gauge that will work with our wasted spark ignition system. A lot of the 80s and newer bikes use this system so sourcing a gauge from a newer or different model shouldn't be a huge issue and should make the going easier. Good luck sir!

So does the great wise one have any suggestions as to which one, Can anyone tell me what the stock 750J tacho display reads up to, or is it LCD or something.
I'm thinking maybe just fit one of those digital tacho's like for a quad or lawn mower (PET2000DX) they just have a wire that you wrap around the HT lead,
They can be left attached and work on 1/2/4/6/8 cyl, 2/4 strokes.

I've no recommendations for you I'm afraid. The stock unit was an analog gauge but I don't remember where the redline is. I can shoot you a photo if you like some time this weekend.

    Thanks, thats what I need.
Not with the type I've been looking at...
This one can be set for this type of ignition system - read section G2, here:http://www.minimotoclub.co.uk/vaughan/pet2000dx3.jpg
I thought all 4 cyl 4 strokes with twin coils (bikes) used the wasted spark system?
