Choke

Hi All, Joined today after buying an air cooled 1985 xj700 project . Needs quite a lot of work , firstly should there be a choke cable sounds a daft question but I noticed a lack of one , and if so where on the carbs does it go or is this some kind of electric choke, and secondly is there another models petrol tap that will fit these as mine has been repaired near where pipe fits on very badly, thanks in advance ... There should be a chock lever on the left handle bar . The cable runs from the lever to a bracket on the carbs . There is a rail with small forks that lift a bobin this is actually a fuel enrichment circuit by all practical purposes. There is no electrical involved with this. Possible the previous owner did some " modifing" of your choke always my favorite. Hope this helps.

 

All of the xj's with hitachi carbs have this style of choke with the exception of Xj750rl and xj900. If your missing the lever it's possible that it is broken and previous owner has removed it, or used it on another bike.

 

Thank you , found the arm carb end which lifts as it should and the lever on the handle bar , have ordered a cable . Looks like someone's fitted a new fuel tap as it's 50mm between centres of the screws , the old screws for the original are closer together and still in place slightly further up the tank so must have been filled so I think I will put a 34mm back in place where the original was , I'm guessing 34mm is the standard for the bike . Will have too then get the other old hole sorted. See tanks on eBay but in USA I'm in U.K. So the postage cost is massive, not many spares here....Thanks again.....Kev

 

Ok excuse me being a d##k head the other screws are not where another tap was as I just looked at pics of a tank on eBay and it's the same, so what is the other bit with something coming out centre , also I guess I will have to find a tap that's not the standard 38mm ...Kev

 

I see adds in the great british mags for lots of salvage yards and germany is another local for parts. Motorcycle Mechanics is where I see the breakers agree may not be wealth of parts for. Xj but you never know.

 

Your air head should be the same as my water cooled X, so if this picture uploads properly you will see the two holes blanked off, one with a bit of wood and the other a magnet. The one with the wood is for the pet cock the one with the magnet is for the fuel level sending unit. If I got your question right then you are asking about the fuel sending unit hole.

 

...and the sending unit should look like this minus the broken wire bit.

Thanks for taking the time in sending the pics, looks like my sender unit has been diconnected or rather the wires chopped, my petrol tap has been repaired badly so I want to replace that. The universal ones are 34mm between screw centres on eBay, mine looks more like 50mm, so finding it hard to get one , just wondering if anyone knew where I could get one, do I need to replace the sender unit as well do you think ?

no need to replace sender unit . it is for the fuel gauge

No, not a plonker at all. The gauge shows up as a little red light on your Tach. IIRC as the fuel get lower it will start to faintly glow until it is solid red.

 

That's great , thanks for that , still no further forward with the fuel tap , get tank off and re measure the distance between screw heads.
