My '82 maxim 650 has been a cold starter from day one. Even when warm it takes a couple of times starting to fire up. I have the choke set on full and I don't have the problems with brushes that others have. I crank it over, it runs for a moment then stalls. It takes a couple of times, more when it is cold out. Then it finally stays running at a low idle for a few seconds then climbs up. Then I just close the choke slowly until it warms up and then it runs and starts fine the rest of the ride. It always will start so I don't want to use starter fluid since that sounds like a bad idea.
    Any ideas what could help?
Also, if I was going to use heat on an area to try warming it up prior to starting, what area should I heat?

Get your oil pan warmed and warm the fuel are my suggestions.

Hasn't been cold enough in Illinois for it to be hard starting. You shouldn't need to warm oil at any temperature you'd be willing to ride.

If it's cranking strong and has hot spark you need to look at the carbs. Specifically the enrichment tubes and the little wells they go in in the bowls, and the hole that connects the well to the float bowl..

Also, make sure you don't have low float levels in the bowls.

    Air leaks?
