Was that ten minutes of riding after the bike had fully warmed up?

Wicked rich! Assuming the bike and carbs are stock, you need to close the pilot screws to lean it some. It will help if you can get a colortune plug to use. If not, set the pilot screws at about 1 1/2 open and install new plugs and then take a 15-20 mile ride and pull the plugs and see what they look like. You are looking for a light tan or gray color on the porcelain. If it is white open the pilot screw about the width of a dime, ride again and re-check the plugs. Continue this process until you get the light tan or gray plugs. It took me a couple of weeks to reach the right setting on each plugs. If you have a colortune plug then start by closing the pilot screws until you see white (lean) and then open until the white disappears. Then install the new plugs and start the ride and check process.

    That'd make him wicked-lean. I'm sure you meant to type 2 1/2.

It would also help to know which model of XJ you have. Some of the earlier models have coarse-thread mixture screws, so the baseline setting is a tad different.

Without a colortune plug that’s where I would start the adjustment process with new plugs. It’s just easy riding until the plugs are dialed in.

When I used a colortune plug I got rid of the white flame somewhere around 1 1/2, so that’s why I mentioned that as a starting point. It took me 6-7 easy rides over a couple of weeks to get the nice tan plugs.
