Mkay, so in my #3 carb there is a different sized spring than the other carbs. Its the same size width wise, but not in length. To be quite honest, it feels like it has the same tension that the other springs have. Potential problem?? Should i get a standard spring for her?

Man you are finding some interesting things. Personally I would replace it. I don't think there is a reliable way to measure it and see if it is equivalent

SL, +1 with Bill. I think would be better to know all are same rather than have an odd ball in the midst of things.

The HSC-33 carbs (700 non-X) use different vacuum pistons, main jet needles, emulsion tubes, and diaphram pistons than all the "other" Hitachi carbs (HSC-32 series) as used on XJ650 and XJ750 models. The longer springs (about 4-1/2" long at rest) are for the HSC33 series carbs.

    On the topic of springs:
At what point to the diaphragms fully open?
I know they are CV carbs, so I would ASSUME that once the engine hit a certain rpm they are fully open.
BUT is it a sudden thing or a gradual process?

With the X there is an amazing surge (some refer to it as the X factor) at about 6500-7000 rpm. In second gear it's enough to lift the front wheel very gracefully if she's running like it should.

Is that the point where the diaphragms open up all the way?
AND, if the springs are un-even will that minimize the surge due to different cylinders catching a full gulp of fuel at slightly different times?

Curious minds want to know :)
and yes, I'm addicted to the X factor...
