I am trying to determine without too much effort whether the recent parts bike I picked up is froze up or not. I put it in gear (1st or 2nd) pulled the plugs and cannot turn the rear wheel. My known good bike does the same thing. I can and have push started my bike, unfortunately the parts bike is not in rolling condition to try.
    Can someone tell me why?
Am I going to have to pull covers and turn motor over at the crank?
    Just curious.

If it's not rolling, yes, I guess I'd pull the cover on the drive-side and get a wrench on the crank. Just be sure not to damage the ignition pickup components.

Pull plugs to make it easier to turn over , put a mixture of Acetone and ATF down the cylinders let it soak 24 hrs and see if it frees up engine.

    +1

Note: you need a 19mm open end wrench. The "nut" cast into the ignition plate is what you will be turning and it is both square, and somewhat soft. Due care is required. The engine tuns counterclockwise when viewed from the left.

Glad your engine isn't seized but be careful, I have several Kaw triples that REALLY don't like rolling backwards while in gear with the clutch lever pulled in...on those, it will cause the kickstarter spring to turn off of it's locked position but some other bikes will bind if rolled backwards any distance while in gear.

On the XJ the only issue with rolling the engine backwards is potentially damaging the cam chain (and then a valve or two if the cam chain breaks).
