Okay, so I promise this is the last part ID. I have an 83 XJ 750 Maxim. Everything is back together with only one extra part. It is some kind of rubber bushing. I have had the engine out of the frame with the top end and side covers off.

And now for what is hopefully the final question: After a carb and engine overhaul how long should I have to crank before expecting the engine to start? I know it can sometimes seem like forever on a car.
    Any help is appreciated!

Looks like a valve stem seal.

To have the engine start more quickly, turn the petcock to PRIME for 15 seconds to fill up your carb float bowls. THen turn it back to ON and push and hold the starter button for 10 seconds max. If it doesn't start, stop for at least 30 seconds and try again another 10 seconds.

It is easy to burn these starters if you keep on starting too long. Anyhow,it wouldn't take too long if everything is fine (a good battery helps a lot). If it doesn't start with the procedure I suggested, there is something wrong and you should stop trying and find the problem.
