anyone aware of a good preferably free program for blackberries. since aftermarket is way too pricey. i want to mount my phone somehow and use whatever software i can put on it to use as a speedometer.

i'm getting an upgrade next month. so my blackberry will be inactive. getting the speedometer fixed is more money then i want to pay for such a cheap bike i won't be keeping long.

if i could find a cheap device to mount up. i would go that route. just so the bike had a functioning properly speedo. i seen recommendations for a bicycle speedo. even went out and bought one from walmart. but mounting the thing is no easy task. the sensor needs to be 1mm from the sensor.

are you sure the phone GPS is working off of satellites, or does it use cell towers ?
i was looking at new phones and some of the reviews said the GPS was too slow for a car and best for walking.......?
mounting isn't that hard, mounting tape works great

the map on my blackberry storm is GPS monitored and will tell you vehicle speed when GPS tracking is selected. Im not sure about other blackberries but you should be able to mount this on you insturment cluster. Im actually in the process.

problem with that is the phone will be deactivated once i upgrade. the majority of maps on the phones require the internet. adapta has a fairly decent speedo. seems to update every 5 seconds i think it is. so it's not constant. it also requires a home page before it kicks in. so that option is no good with a dactivated phone. i have 2 other programs. but they have small numbers. and don't have the option to keep the screen lit.

I don't think the Magnetic / Wireless / Bicycle-type Speedo is your answer.

At wheel rotational speeds, ... far exceeding Bicycle rpm's ... I'd be surprised to learn you got a Magnetic Field System to work. I doubt the magnet is going to stay put.

Polock is A1 100% correct. At least I think he is. Here's what I know to be true. I have had a BlackBerry Curve and currently have the new model Bold with AT&T as my carrier and their rental program for the service. When I am in a remote area and there is no cell service THERE IS NO GPS!. A lot of central Washington and Oregon States are very remote with no cell service hence no GPS.

i never tried a wireless one, thats next, but the wired ones are good for 99 mph +
that scotch mounting tape is good stuff (not the harbor freight stuff)
had one on every bike and never had a magnet fly off

gps works on satellite. gps maps work on internet. if you got no signal youi won't get a gps map to work. as there's no internet to pull down the area. thus, no gps signal. but if you have some type of a gps logger program. such as the kind you want to backtrace yourself in the mountains. as i occasionally do when i'm lost on the dirt bike. gps works just fine. and can trace you back.

gps works everywhere you go. it's the maps that require the internet that don't work. unless you have a tom tom or one of them mountain gps units. where the maps are preloaded and require no internet.

i had 3 gps speedo programss on my old windows mobile phone that i threw away. those programs worked with no problem. WITH THE PHONE DEACTIVATED so they had absolutely no signal to make them work.

I'd make sure you can figure out a mount/shroud setup so that you can actually read the display while riding in sunlight before you go to much expense. I went thru a lot of effort to mount a GPS unit as a speedo and ended up removing it and doing something else because I really couldn't read the tiny speed number in actual use (except at night). I could have mounted a shroud to shade the unit, but that defeated my original goal of minimizing the look of my displays.

    Cturek,
I didn't know you had that problem with that mod you did. I think the mod is cool as hell, but it's funny as I have been searching for a GPS with larger numbers. Haven't found one yet. Still looking though.

I bought an aftermarket speedo for I think 80 bones and it had LED indicator lights for oil, high beam, turn signal, and neutral. Found a site might be able to find a better deal. You'll need the 2240:60 ratio I believe.

that's the best price i've seen yet. but i really am hoping for just a speedo only type setup. that doesn't require using the bike's cable. the odometer works and i really don't want to seperate that.
