I just stripped and rebuilt most of my 81 550 maxim ( thanks all on here for the insights especially the carb. clinics ) I have it back together and running like a top and at the final stage i.e repainting the gas tank to finish up.

What I am after is a color code for this bike there does not seem to be one on the stem label and with the 9 digit vin it is not in there either (5k5008838) , I also don't know if this is a single or dual layer paint, type of top coat, etc. , etc.

I would actually prefer some metallic silver flakes in the new paint job ( think that would be cooler then stock )
but stock color would be very good at this point.

We don't have any good walk in paint shops in town at this point in time or I would just go that route Rollie- Williams used to be my go to for that, now they don't do custom mixes anymore for automotive.

Attached is my tank and side panel pic .. just like many others I have seen here (except for the rust and ding ) , The light makes that look a lot lighter then it is the side panel is the true(ish) color

..and yes I will eventually polish those rusty nasty looking head bolts .....

That will be SS base. Bccc will be much more forgiving and easier to get metallic into. I have a very similar bccc base you can use for that color that will look amazing. Im going to use it in mine

I was gonna polish my head bolts, but instead got some titanium ones from AliExpress (I didn't want bright chrome), or you can get new bright cad plated ones. The finish is likely gone on the originals.

I believe we still have a single PINT CAN (enough to paint 2 or 3 bikes!) still remaining in stock.

    EMBLEMS, STRIPES, DECALS, PAINT

    Single-Stage Reds and Maroons:

PLEASE NOTE: red pigments are hard to get 100% accurate color match from batch-to-batch of paint mixtures, so if possible, you may need to "mix" the application from the first batch to this batch of cans.........such as, use up the first cans of paint to do the first coat on all items, and then this second batch to do the second (or subsequent) coats). The colors will be close enough so that this will not present a problem, but if there is any difference in shading, metallic content, or what paint people call "the flop" of the paint, the above process will eliminate any visual differences in the final painted items.

HCP7914SP Aftermarket X-ACT MATCH BODY PARTS PAINT features the correct Yamaha Code 7J New Ruby Red metallic high-gloss finish as used on painted metal and plastic body panels, cowlings, fairings, etc. Requires no special surface preparation (besides absolute cleanliness!) and cures without heat or catalysts. Primer is required. This beautiful color is a dark maroon-red with a moderate amount of metallics, and is as close as possible to the original Yamaha color. Faded versions of this paint look awful, as all of the red tends to wash out, leaving it appearing as an almost-rust colored paint, but the original color is very attractive! Originally used on all of the following models: 1981 XJ550 Maxim, 1980 XJ650 Maxim, 1983 XJ750 Maxim, and 1982 XJ1100 models. Also featured on the 1980 XS1100G and XS1100SG models. Each aerosol can contains 12 ounces. Each can:
