I recently purchased a beat-up Maxim. It was sold as a 1985 XJ700 Maxim but I'd like to double-check. (The last motorcycle I picked up was sold as a 250 but turned out to be a 185.) I'd like to be 100% sure before I start threads, order parts, etc.

I've looked around the bottom of the jugs where the displacement was stamped on my 185 but haven't found anything. I've tried VIN decoders, but they all just tell me that my VIN is invalid.

So, it's probably a 700, but it might be a 750, or...? Is the displacement stamped somewhere on the engine? Are there answers buried in the VIN?

    Any help appreciated.

vin decoder has to fields for entry. the second field is for short vin off of motor. enter only 1 vin field.

Thanks! I blasted the oil and grit off and found the displacement (696cm^3) so it's definitely a 700. An XJ700N for sale in the US, in fact.

The VIN decoders I found online all get confused, insisting that the "1FG" part is impossible because the 'F' cannot be an F and the G should be a digit. *shrug*

At least I can actually see the VIN on this one. My last bike had an obscured VIN which, worse, was the old shorty version. It took me forever to unpack it.
