    If it were my bike I'd save myself headaches, and get a good, used, unmolested wiring harness for the bike. Otherwise you'll be chasing your tail all winter to get it correct.

    I'm leaning toward bad relay.

    The Headlight comes ON when you switch the IGN - ON.
    Test feature. Shows Headlight is working.
    Goes OFF when the Start Button is Pressed to allow more current to feed the Starter.
    Headlight Relay to the rear of the Coils.
    Once the Bike Starts, ... the Headlight should come back ON and stay ON.

    Rick, on 82 XJ650J headlight only turns on when the engine is running.

    Yep, except for my jury-rigged 650 LOL!!

    How bout the speedo and tach lights? When should those come on? And what color is the background, is it a red? I'm pretty sure I saw them on when I was in the canyon and it was raining.... Not sure, maybe I was seeing things LOL!!
