I have a 1986 XJ 700 maxim and I was wondering about testing the resistance on them. Do you test the primary at the plug or where the wires are soldered to the coils? I tested it at the soldered part and i got 3.8 ohm on the primary on both. I tested the secondary resistance and got about 12500 ohm on both. I need to get new spark plug caps for it and I wanted to check the coils too while i was working on it. Just want to make sure I am doing it right.

You did it right. The secondary resistance in the manuals is without caps. NGK LB05F (1/4) and YB05F (2/3) are good aftermarket replacements for the caps.
