    Hi everyone,
I have a 1982 XJ650RJ. I replaced the original lead-acid battery for a lithium ion battery Shorai (model: LFX14L2-BS12). I was wondering if it was dangerous or bad for the battery to use the original regulator? It works fine, the bike runs great, but haven't tried it for long distance yet.

If it is not a good idea to use the original regulator, what should I buy?

From what I can see on their site, you should be fine with the stock regulator. I expect that they have a built-in circuit to handle balancing the charging of the individual cells.

Well, for one thing, at 14.8V output from such a battery, your charging system won't be able to keep it fully charged.

i'm not sure it has to, my voltage stays around 13.8 to 14, a 4s charges around 16.8 so it just won't get to full charge.
over charging is when things get tricky

I've heard that the stock regulators will send higher voltage to the battery while the bike is running. For lead-acid batteries this is alright because it can handle the voltage. I've heard for lithium ion batteries anything above 14V will cause overcharging and can possibly overheat the battery. It can be bad with time and the batterie life will diminish.

This is all that i've read. I want to know if this is all just a myth or is there actual proof that this is true

lipo cells charge at 4.2v/cell so a 4 cell would normally charge at 16.8. the most the bike could make if the regulator works is 14.?.
i think if anything it might hurt the battery from being under charged, and it would waste a lot of battery capacity
and i'm not sure 10 gauge wire on the battery would cut it
