if he does not know the difference, it may not be as "well running " as you think it will be

Of course. I use the interwebs. Haha. Barely. I'm not trying to act like I know much. I just research everything. The difference is performance and it being liquid cooled mostly. Other than that it appears the engine has some cosmetic differences. The guy knows them well enough to have put the carbs and pipes back to stock.

… And did he show you a chart of all 20 current shims?

Shim chart? Huh? Haven't gone to see it because of his schedule. Dude works 10 hour days and is gone from 10 am till after dark. And the weather is crappie this morning. It will have to wait till tomorrow. Do tell about the shims though. I'm all ears. And contrary to my research ability, I know enough to know I'm still quite clueless. :D

Hog is referencing the fact that the "X" series water cooled bikes have five valves per cylinder for a total of twenty. Proper procedure for a valve shim check includes measuring all clearances as a first step then measuring all existing shims to determine if any can be swapped around (from too tight to too loose) to bring them all back to proper clearances. The easiest way to track all of this is with a handy chart (available in several threads on this forum). The chart works the same for all XJs, but obviously with the water cooled bikes you just have more shims/valves to measure and track.

In a nutshell, the X has a shim under bucket setup, And there are 20 valves. If clearances need to be adjusted, you must lift the cams.
The airhead is a shim over bucket set up, And there are only eight valves. You do not lift the cams for these.

There is much more work involved in the MaximX.

Let us know what he says, and will let you know if it's correct or not… Or if he is just blowing smoke-LOL
