Simple question: would a Maxim 650 complete exhaust system (headers and mufflers) bolt on a Maxim 750 engine and frame without modifications? I mean Maxims of the same era (early 80s).

    Thanks in advance

Yes the exhausts are interchangeable, I have a 4-1 system off a 650 maxim on my 750 seca.

    I disagree.

The header pipes are different lengths. I am certain of that. Also the mounting bolts for mufflers are slightly off but I would think with a few modifications it may work. I know its not an easy switch because I tried putting an entire 4-to-2 system Maxim 750 exhaust on my Maxim 650, and the kickstand was going to be in the way.

My solution (problem was mufflers were rusted through) was to cut the mufflers off the 750 system, make a coupler to insert and connect the mufflers through my existing 650 (4-to-2) exhaust system. Now I've got the slanted muffler tips (from the 750 system) on my maxim 650 which make people, who ask what size my bike is & understand a thing or two about XJ's,,, confused. haha

this aftermarket exhaust I have is designed to be interchangeable between these two xj's, I can't say the same for factory setups.

The collectors are also different, the 650 has more of a simple 'H' pipe whereas the 750's have more of an actual collector box. So I'm sure the mounting is different.

According to what you say about that H collector on the 650 exhaust system compared to a collector box on the 750, it might be easier to put a 650 complete system on a 750 than the opposite, at least in relation with the center stand.

Considering the different length of headers, my other concern would be if it would interfere with the footrests and controls. Would it be a problem?

The 650 Maxim exhaust is a true dual 2-1 with a crossover pipe.
The 750 Maxim exhaust is a 4-2 through a collector box.

While the headpipes will mount to the engine with no proplem. The mounting location of the mufflers are different, and will require some adapting at that point. Also note that the 750 collector box uses a mounting bracket attached to the rear underside of the engine.

So the way I understand what you wrote, if I ever find a nice exhaust system off of a 650, and assuming my collector box on my 750 is in good shape (I haven't looked under the bike yet), I could use the headers from the 650 with no problem, keep the collector box of the 750, and bolt the 650 mufflers with some adjustments (homemade brackets), that's about it?
