I’m planning to run K&N pods on my 81 XJ650 Maxim. I know the consensus here is not to do it but it’s a done deal. No air box. My question is should I re-jet the carbs first or try it and see how it runs then decide. I also plan to run a MAC 4 into 1 exhaust. I’m at about 4000 ft. here in the Reno area. Any thoughts? Please don’t tell me I’m crazy for running pods though.

She'll run lean if you don't rejet. No doubt about that.

With 400o’ in Reno you may get away with stock jetting. How did it run before ? If you had slightly black plugs it may make enough difference.

It sat for a long time but it ran good. I cleaned the carbs and figure as long as I have them off the bike I might re jet. What size would you think?

You will be experimenting with jets start going up 2 sizes , one thing you really need to fabricate a brace at the back of the carbs. Relying on the boots alone puts a lot of weight on the boots can lead to cracking of the boots. With the airbox the carbs are supported on both ends , pods do not have this .

your going to pull the carbs 10 or 15 more times so one more won't really matter

Already have the pods. Thanks anyway. Could’ve saved a few bucks.

I may be interested in the Genuine K&N filters? What model and size are they? Are they four individual or pairs of two? My non-running 750 Maxim came without carburetors or airbox./ I got a set of 650 carburetors free but now I'm trying to chase down jets for a 750, mains and pilots are easy but others are not. The jet kits I bought have a Jet needle of Y403S the stock is Y-13. Not thrilled with Hitachi.
    Cheers, 50gary

best bet is to stuff your stock airbox boots into the pod and remove the stock ring. Gotta find narrow enough pods and its going to be a tight fit. Way better delivery than the boots that come with the pods.
