Mixture screw disaster!

I need help! I broke off the tabs on a couple mixture screws on my HSC 33 carbs. I tried all sorts o' stuff on one trying to extract, and no such luck? anyone have any ideas or can do it? Or an extra #4 carb body for an 86 700 airhead (no vac port!) thx

What "tabs" are you refering to?

A guy at a machine shop would drill the very center of the mixture screw with a reverse drill bit while holding the carb in a vise on the drill press.

The broken tabs are the original slot on the screw - I presume.

Chacal sells the thread-tap and new hardware.

See if you can get it center-drilled then use an easy-out or a reverse drill bit. If you can get it out, there's a chance I MAY have another screw depending on what kind you have.

ok.... here's an update. Nothing i hate more than an un-finished post. I was able to get it out by drilling down with a RH bit, into the spring and increasing sizes gradually so the thicker part + needle seperated. then i kept gradually increasing sizes until there was a real thin piece of brass in there was able to break it in half at that point + out it came

 

Good for you! At first, it didn't sound like a story that would have a happy ending.

 

ps... i also took the opportunity to upgrade to the ss ones that Len sells. Not going through that again

 

SS mixture screws will be a lot harder to drill if they get stuck...just a thought.

 

A little dab of anti-seize paste on the screw before installation will prevent them getting stuck, at all.........
