This is something I was not aware of, back when the Big 4 Japanese were introducing turbos, Italian company Moto Morini were developing one of their own. Kool article if you have the time.

What an interesting bike. Our Yamaha Turbos are "cool", that slick looking beauty is "COOL!" I cannot imagine trying to keep a '70s era Italian Turbo bike running and in tune though. Sort of akin to herding cats or nailing jello to a tree. If it were viable though it would be superbly awesome.

Interesting approach they took with the off boost issue, similar to the Yamaha they both bypass the turbo at lower RPM's, the Yamaha relies on a reed valve where the Moto Marini operates a valve/distributor at 4,000 RPM's.
They mounted a fuel injector down at the compressor to balance out the extra air injected when this opens at 4000 RPM. Until 4,000 the turbo is pushing against this closed distributor, then boom, boost!
