*Sorry for all the probably pretty stupid questions lately, I am new to XJs and somewhat new to motorcycles in general*

My XJ650 Maxim has an awful loud rattling coming from the right muffler at high 4Ks - 5K RPMs, I checked and I am not seeing any loose/broken clamps or really shot mounts. It seems like it is actually coming from inside the muffler itself like a baffle has vibrated loose or something, it is quite annoying being very loud and shaking the bike a bit. Has anyone else had this happen, and is there anything I can do about it?

Take off the muffler, shake it, confirm the source is in the muffler and not the collector. If it IS in the muffler.... Time for new mufflers? Muffler baffles like to rust and fall apart :(

There's probably some flaked off rust inside. Take both mufflers off and give them a good shake to get it all out.

Often the heat shield (chrome trim) will break a weld or the strap will break. Easiest way to test-- when you hear the buzz/rattle tuck your toe against it. If it stops, you know what it is. Wedge something in there. I use leather, or rubber.....whatever is handy, but make sure it can take the heat, until you're able to get it tacked again.

Yup, it was the heat shield, wow I feel stupid. Anything I wedged under it was falling out, so I threw a hose clamp on it until my dad can tack weld it back up and the noise is gone. Thanks!

No need to feel stupid--- you asked a question, and listened to the answer ......the stupid ones ask but DON'T listen.
