Found this in a snow back for $200. already have the carbs in the workshop cleaned and waiting to be put back together. Side covers were frozen to the ground so the guy is going to send them to me when he can get them out.

 

Nice, how many miles? Thats the '81 Seca?

 

18k miles and yes 81 seca 750

 

What's your plans?

 

Strip it down and paint the frame and engine gloss black. Polish the engine fins and some of the round covers. Clean up the exhaust and crash bars and leave them chrome. Paint the body panels, fenders and tank a satin black. Pull the lights and gauges. Put on dual round headlights, led signals and brake/tail lights, different gauges, mini wind screen. Vinyl yamaha and seca 750 stickers in silver to replace the stock one. And of course all the normal stuff breaks etc that you do on any new old bike. At least that is the plan for now.

 

I just bought an 81 750 seca. You mentioned a mini screen or faring I assume. Are after market parts available for the Seca XJ?? Thanks, terryj1943

 

there is a small fairing you can get for the seca as well as full fairings that can be used a few people around the site have them. I have no idea what kind of modification is involved or if they are straight bolt on.

you can tell at a glance it's the 81 because of the YELLOW aux lamp. There was a recall on that and they sold clear ones 82 and on.
Best to double check your local legalities.

also 81 had that smooth seat covering vs the "ribbed" later but that's harder to spot.

That looks only a touch worse than my daily's condition.

Lucky you, ya scored some crash guards too. The sound with that 4-1 should be pretty bitchen.

How many miles on the clock?

 

No it wouldn't need much to get it going. The shifter doesn't center so will need a new spring most likely. One of the carbs was seized but that has been fixed already. The engine wouldn't turn but when I got it home and warm it spins right over so there must have been some ice somewhere. seat needs a cover but I have a great local guy that did my 650. Couple broken cables and 3 broken signal lights. And of course it has my favorite mod no fuse box. Nothing overly major although I was a little worried about the motor at first.

The yellow light will be coming off along with the stock headlight so I can put dual rounds on. 18k on the clock.

 

I'll pay a few bucks plus shipping for your old one (and the mounting brackets too if those come off when ya upgrade)

Poke around the site for some of the regular maintenance items that are probably due on it in addition to the more obvious rebuild/restore stuff. I got mine with around 12k on the clock and the valves were so tight I SWEAR it the shims that it got at the factory =(

She's a darling and will take as good a care of you as you do her. At least mine has. (can ya tell by now I've got a soft spot for "my" bike?)

 

I was going to say, do a compression test. If you get any goofy numbers, check the valves. That's a young motor and the bike doesn't appear to be in all that bad of a condition.

Nice find. Be sure to check the rear brake right away, too.

 

My brother stopped by today and we tinkered with the bike a bit got the electrical temporarily wired together and everything appears to work (minus the broken signals). Have to find a compression gauge and get the numbers so I know if I need to do any work when I take the engine off the bike. Fenders, tank, seat, tail section, and exhaust are all hanging on the wall now and my carbs are mostly together except I need to get some float bowl gaskets. All in all a fun couple hours playing around.

 

Well haven't really done anything in a few days but thought Id post a couple pics of what the bike looks like now. I've had the brakes off and cleaned no compression numbers yet (need a gauge lol).

 

Is that the riding position of those bars??? LOL

 

Flipped them up so they weren't in my way when I pulled the engine. lol

 

Not much of interest lately lots of little parts and pieces coming in, most everything has been sanded and primed that needs it, lots of polishing and back to black. I need the weather to turn warmer so I can get some paint blown on.

 

Got the tail plastic, side covers, tank, and front fender painted yesterday. unfortunately I got a couple little sags on the front of the tank that I had to clean up today but it was too humid to finish up the paint. I'll grab some pics when I get a chance overall looks pretty good for my first try with a paint gun.

Haven't posted on this in a while but I have made a lot of progress. Only things left are to wire up one or two things, install exhaust, tighten up some bolts, start her up and tune her.
