Hey guys, I've been checking this site for a week now. I like it a lot so I joined. About myself: I just got my first bike a Yamaha XJ750RJ SECA. I also have a complete parts bike minus the engine to go with this bike.
Got it on the road already, handles nice and it's in pretty good shape. Only thing is the valve cover leak, but I already ordered the gasket for it. I'm new to bikes, but not to wrenching and getting down and dirty with engines, and fixing cars and trucks.

The one thing that I hate about my bike, is the square headlight and auxiliary light. I really want to sawp it for one of the round ones. I like the looks of the XJ650's better.

My question would be, is this a fairly easy swap? I'm mostly concerned with the mounting bracket. can I use my bracket or do I need the whole thing? Has anyone done this swap? I plan on removing the blue running lights the P.O. installed too. This is my bike right now.

I agree that the Max has a much spiffier headlight.
Send a PM to chacal to find out about what fits and what works. He sells all of that stuff and should know.

What? You guys are sick. Square headlights scream "1980's" I love mine. I admit that I can't seem to find a cafe fairing for square lights vs round ones. When I look at these bikes I hear every '80's tune I grew up with in high school. Leave it alone! :)

Looks like PO also had the seat redone, and nicely.

Get the rubber donuts for the valve cover bolts too; they are what actually push down on the cover the bolts themselves have stop collars on them.

And Welcome! It's great to see yet another XJ on the road, not on eBay in bits.

Thanks for the replies guys, and the warm welcome.. I just noticed I did not spell newbie right. :?

Well I know some of you like the square light, so i tell you what. I'll send it to whomever wishes to have it once it's gone. :D It will be gon,no doubt. I don't like it.

I have a few other things in mind, like smaller turn signal lights and lowering the bike about two inches. That and the lights is all I want for now.

Robert, thanks for the welcome. I really like this site a lot, lots of phots = inspiration. I did not know how much potential there was for these bikes until I stumbled upon this site.

Bigfitz52, thanks for the rubber donuts update. I'll start looking for them right away.

yesterday I got rid of the autozone lights and today i want to upgrade the fuse box.. I also have to figure out how to find this CHACAL. lol.

Does anyone know if the 4 to 1 exhaust is better than the 2 to 1 dual exhaust? ups and downs? tone? etc. any imput would be great. I have the 2 to 1 on now, but I have the 4 to 1 in my shed as well.

If you start modding the exhaust (and the intake) you're inviting tons of hassle. You'll see lots of posts about "filter pods" and 4-1 Supertrapp muffler modifications. You end up needing to rejet the carbs which is a trial-and-error, time consuming chore that ends up resulting in no net gain in horsepower whatsoever.

Be glad your bike is so stock. It'll run perfectly that way. My bike has been neglected and modded to death and I'm paying for it. I have the filter pods and Supertrapp 4-1 and I constantly tinker with it to find the best idle and I have no way of knowing if I'm really getting all I can out of the engine. On top of all this, you can't remove/install the air filter box without removing the engine or cutting up the box.

If you're going to mess with the exhaust, at least keep your old stuff so you can put it back if it doesn't run right with the new stuff. I'd probably also stick with the stock 2-1, 2-1 configuration and just try different cans and headers.

You can reach Chacal by either the XJ4Ever forum or shoot him an email at info@xj4ever.com. He will respond quickly and provide XJ specific guidance and advise you on any questions you might have. That and reasonable prices on XJ parts!
I'll echo Sushi on your exhaust, don't chuck your stock stuff if you start modding, you will most likely find you return to it given the amount of work that tuning a modified system takes to get a reasonably idling engine. Suffice it to say that you can modify for power gains but you will give up something to get there. It is all about trading one thing for another... and it can be a maddening process.

Welcome - great looking bike. I'm in favor of keeping things fairly stock but also like a round headlight. It can be done but I think you need the brackets and all to do so.

Welcome Xulf, you have come to the right place for anything & everythhing you might need to knnow on your bike. Glad to have you. As for the question on exhaust, it may depend on manufacturer as to whether you would need to rejet. I put a Mac 4-1 system on my 650 did not need to rejet, tuned perfect, idles smooth & hauls you now what when you want it to. Again, welcome.

The exhaust I have, was once on the bike I now have. The Previous owner said he swaped it out for the 2-1 2-1 fromt the parts bike and he liked the sound better. I will probably not mess with it anytime soon. I know that when i do and if i do the swap I'll be ready to tune or rejet the carbs. And I must first learn more about tuning and rejetting and what tools I will need and where to get the parts and jets needed. I'm used to tuning Webers and Holley's for cars and that's about it.

As for the square gauge thing, that will be next as well. Although there are some (I've seen) with the round light and square gauges. I might do the whole XJ650 front swap at once.

Parts are easy just PM Chacal on this site - he has good prices and fast shipping. He has a catalog of most parts posted in the XJ4EVER Topic.

I would love to swap out some 8" round headlights, but those are hard to come by. So I will be doing the xj650 round headlight swap in a couple of weeks. I gotta cut, the the stock headlight brackets from the stay bracket so I can put after market headlight brackets on the shock arms. Then install my 7" XJ650 headlight. This way I will keep the stock location for my master cylinder. I will however like to convert the MC to that of the 650 or an R6 and get a longer hose in the future.

I ordered my drag bar and new handle grips. That should be in by next week. I'' keep you guys posted. And thanks a lot for your input. It is always apreciated.
