I gave up for the day. Wind is blowing about 40 mph out side and swirling crap around in the garage. Rags were blowing away and given what was going on it was aggravating and not a good situation for dealing with gasoline. I need to have the door open and it just got to be too much.

BTW, I know you can still get OEM intake and air cleaner boots but I would be looking at around $200 for everything. Does someone sell a repop that might be a little more reasonable?

Been a minute due to finishing another project. Now that that one is wrapped up(for the most part) I can get back into getting these carbs lined out. 62EF95A4-ABEF-4F82-9C46-F7196C0E7DB8.jpeg
I did pick up a set of intakes from a Japanese supplier I use. 0DEE9CB3-4E27-4323-B2F2-48075B72BA89.jpeg They might not be as good as OEM but they are much better than the dried out cracked ones I have.

I took that bike down to a bare frame and totally reworked it. Everything that needed replacing got taken care of. All the rust got polished off.

I used Aldi or Lidl Surface Cleaner in my small u/s cleaner. Doesn't take a lot, about 10% dilution.

Got back into the carbs today and if you notice in the manual it says do not separate the carbs unless you have a jig to put them back together? I thought that was a little extreme because without doing that you can’t replace the fuel pipe o-rings which I feel is a good idea if you’re going into the carb set. I had to work on that #1 sticky float needle and apparently I pulled my best PO imitation by leaving fuel in the carbs for 3 months so I pulled them back apart for a good cleaning. 62D3D8AA-951F-40AE-985F-90F8B4981DBA.jpeg
I find that doing things multiple time has made me quick lol. I had them apart, cleaned(they were still pretty good) and popped back together using the brackets to space them. B3FEE5E4-6215-4B88-8CF9-B2C356621A5B.jpeg F45B94E4-9DE9-442A-AD6E-1074BAC3691B.jpeg
Then I used the sight through method to bench sync them. A0815164-4AA1-4024-830A-875C6C6183F4.jpeg

I also have a question about the turn signals and front fender on this bike 78219E5C-812A-4700-A924-4C3AA02987ED.jpeg ECFB7D98-C5E8-4E23-8726-0ADB6ADB19A4.jpeg 5D501137-A26C-4CC8-BBD0-A8F6333DE7B9.jpeg
These don’t look like any I’ve seen.

I’m thinking the front fender is from a 70’s XS minus the stays. Also I. Couldn't remember doing a compression test so I grabbed the gauge and started on #4. Results as follows. 4/128, 3/128, 2/118, 1/60. Bummer because I’m just not ready to start another project right now. Might consider parting this one out.

Might be nothing more than stuck rings. Have you checked the valve clearances?

The acetone and ATF mix should free up the piston rings. Worth a try.

I’ll try freeing them up because Im not crazy about breaking up a complete bike but Im also not crazy about tearing into it.
