I've devised my own version of the spin on filter adapter and was wondering (before I pull both bikes apart) if I can still use the oil cooler that i recently aquired off of the parts bike -and- the spin on filter adapter together? Or would I have to revert back to the factory filter setup? Is there a diagram of the oil cooler? Will I need a longer center bolt if it does work together?

    Thanks,

I guess a picture of what you have for a spin on adapter might help. The oil cooler plat has a back flow vale in it if that is what you mean.

It looks identical to the aftermarket spin on adapter, uses factory oring seal and filter used in after market kit. (I'm a machinist... pictures are worth a 1000 words!!) The more I think about it the more I think it will work just fine.

    Nevermind....

    You're breaking new ground.

That Bolt is the Pressure Relief Valve.

My adapter is almost a dead ringer to this one, but I put in a little more of a relief cut and outside edge for looks and tapered the interior bore a bit: http://plan9.dnsalias.org:88/xj/products/adapter.html (I know, I know patent infringment... but I'm not selling them so no harm no foul, just made myself one for a total of less than $8.50 in materials - my time is freeeeeeeeee!!)

My thoughts are that it appears the cooler adapter goes on first using a hollow bolt, than the adapter would mount up as usual in place of the factory filter/bolt/cover, all would work as usual.

My adapter is made using the OEM replacement o-ring from a fram filter kit, so sealing attributes are in the same location as factory against the block....

So the pressure relief.... is this eliminated with the spin on kit? Is this bad? The only reason it should need to relieve pressure is in the event of a clogged filter, but if you change oil around the 1500-2000miles mark as I do this shouldn't be a problem!?!?

    Thanks,

I hit the link you posted Chared and my overpriced calculator said it couldn't find the server. I think you have a bum link.

That's the way it goes on.
There's an Special Fastener that holds-on the Cooler section.

Polock, I thought the same thing about 20 years without one..... but now that I's gots one.... I may as well put it on!! (Just like the engine guards, factory seat hinge pins & seat prop rod I've already swapped over)
